چکیده

Foot ulcers are a common and devastating complication of diabetes. Many patients with diabetic foot ulcers experience significant disability and ultimately require amputation. Despite attentive management with multiple modalities including surgical debridement, relief of pressure, and other standard measures, many diabetic foot ulcers persist as chronic, nonhealing wounds. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy is an effective adjunct to standard modalities for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. HBO therapy increases oxygen tension in tissues, thereby supporting physiologic wound healing while inhibiting the growth of anaerobic organisms. Randomized clinical studies confi rm that HBO therapy accelerates wound healing and decreases the need for amputation in patients with diabetic foot ulcers.

Effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on healing of diabetic foot ulcers.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be used as an adjunct to standard wound care in the treatment of diabetic patients with foot ulcers. We undertook a prospective, randomized investigation of the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy versus standard therapy for the treatment of foot ulcers in diabetic patients. A number of demographic variables were analyzed in regard to wound healing. We noted that foot...

Counterpoint: hyperbaric oxygen for diabetic foot wounds is not effective.

BACKGROUND Diabetic foot ulceration is common, affecting 1.0%-4.1% of diabetic persons per year and up to 25% in a lifetime. Diabetic foot ulcers are multifactorial in origin, and many are slow to heal and/or are complicated by infection, frequently leading to amputation. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been suggested for numerous indications, and it is recognized by funding agencies for a smalle...

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy as adjunctive treatment for diabetic foot ulcers.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been suggested to improve healing of hard-to-heal diabetic foot ulcers. Although the wide use of HBOT as a treatment for diabetic foot ulcers has been founded on weak scientific ground, 2 well-designed randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies have in recent years put HBOT on firmer ground as treatment for diabetic patients with chronic foot ulcer...

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Facilitates Healing of Chronic Foot Ulcers in Patients With Diabetes

OBJECTIVE Chronic diabetic foot ulcers are a source of major concern for both patients and health care systems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in the management of chronic diabetic foot ulcers. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS The Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Diabetics with Chronic Foot Ulcers (HODFU) study was a randomized, single-center, doub...

IGF-1 Increases with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Promotes Wound Healing in Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Objectives. To investigate insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-1) levels in response to hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for diabetic foot ulcers and to determine whether IGF-1 is a predictive indicator of wound healing in patients with diabetic foot ulcers. Design and Methods. We treated 48 consecutive patients with diabetic foot ulcers with HBOT. Alterations of IGF-1 levels in patients whose wo...
